Driver jailed after trail of mayhem

A NEW driver knocked down a police officer at a busy intersection and then injured another four people as he fled the scene.

But the brakes were applied in court yesterday when he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Wang Quanhao, a 29-year-old Anhui Province native, got his driving license in March and just a few days later ignored a policeman's signal to stop at the intersection of Yishan and Nandan roads in Xuhui District during rush hour.

Twice, the officer signaled him to stop to let other vehicles turn. Instead, he pretended to slow down, bumped into the officer and then sped off, Xuhui District People's Court heard, but not before knocking down two cyclists and colliding with two cars.

The cyclists and the drivers were slightly injured, the police officer suffered bruising.
