Driver on charges over scheme to rob his boss

A DRIVER who allegedly conspired with others to rob his boss has been arrested and charged with robbery, Minhang District prosecutors said yesterday.

Two accomplices, Lu Changyun and Ge Rilin, were also arrested.

Prosecutors say Xiao Yifeng, 22, an Anhui Province native, disclosed his boss's schedule to the two and helped them steal 41,000 yuan (US$6,000) and two bank cards.

Luo Min, general manager of a private company, hired Xiao as a driver last year at a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan. He was happy with Xiao's work, buying him a moped and a mobile phone and giving him 500 yuan on Xiao's son's first birthday.

But despite Luo's kindness, Xiao was persuaded by Lu and Ge, fellow villagers, to help them in their robbery scheme.

On February 11, Xiao told Ge he would be driving his boss home around 10pm and they lay in wait, prosecutors said.

When Luo opened the car door, Ge and Lu pushed him back into the car and took out knives, pretending to force Xiao to drive the car out of the community, prosecutors alleged.

They stopped near the Outer Ring Road where Ge and Lu are said to have stolen the cash and bank cards from Luo.

Then, as part of the plan, Ge cut Xiao on the hand to avoid suspicion falling on him and ordered him to drive to the bank. They then threw Luo out of the vehicle.

Ge and Lu got out of the car soon after, while Xiao went back to Luo's home. He told Luo's wife what had happened and how he had escaped after fighting with the robbers.

But when the police arrived, Xiao's feelings of guilt overcame him and he tried to run away. That was when police suspected he had been in on the scheme.

Lu and Ge were caught in an Internet cafe a few days later.
