Driver who hit 16 vehicles was on meth

THE driver who hit 16 cars and motorcycles and injured four people on Saturday night had been using the powerful stimulant methamphetamine, known as meth or ice, and was having hallucinations, police said.

The driver, surnamed Xue, was taken into custody after the incident in the Pudong New Area and detained yesterday for threatening public safety with dangerous methods.

The four injured had bone fractures and bruises and remained in stable condition yesterday.

Police said they received several calls about 10pm on Saturday after the 32-year-old Xue hit the vehicles near Lingyan Road S. and Changqing Road with a borrowed black Buick sedan he had borrowed.

Xue drove to a residential area at 1180 Lingyan Road S. and while he was waiting at the neighborhood gate he started to behave in an out-of-control fashion, police said.

His sedan suddenly reversed and hit the taxi behind and then he drove forward and then backward more than 20 times until he knocked the cab out of the gate.

Xue then knocked down dozens of bicycles inside the community.

Chased by officers, Xue drove into a market near the neighborhood on Sanlin Road and hit some cars before he was caught by police.

Aside from the bicycles, Xue also hit 11 sedans, four motorcycles and one electric scooter.

"He acted like he was crazy," a security guard surnamed Lu of the neighborhood recalled.

When Xue was surrounded by officers, he shouted that he was surrendering and asked police not to shoot him, witnesses said. Xue tested positive for methamphetamine, which he told police he'd used at home about 4pm that day. He borrowed the car from a friend.

Xue is responsible for the cost of medical treatment and economic losses he caused, according to the law.
