Driver who hit 4 and fled captured

POLICE have apprehended a driver suspected of fleeing after hitting four people and three cars in Qingpu District early yesterday morning.

The three women and one man who were injured were in a stable condition in hospital last night, officers said.

The driver, 22, was drunk driving after meeting with friends, according to police.

He admitted he "had drunk a lot of beer that night," police said.

His car struck the pedestrians at about 2am, after failing to brake while turning at Qingpu's Chengzhong Road.

The vehicle did not stop and careered into a parked car alongside the road. That car then shunted two taxis.

Only when it hit a bus stop did the suspect's car come to a halt. Witnesses said the car also knocked over a stall.

"The driver abandoned the car and ran away after seeing all the destruction around him," said a witness.

The car had a local car plate number and officers said they quickly traced the driver. Investigation is continuing.
