Drug cases rise 25% in Shanghai
DRUG cases in Shanghai have increased about 25 percent in the first five months this year, since police have launched a crackdown, local authorities said today.
Drug trafficking was active during January to April, with about 87 percent of cases investigated. In May, the number of cases dropped dramatically when the World Expo opened, and neighboring provinces have cooperated with Shanghai to crack down on drug dealing.
Zhou Weihang, director of the Shanghai Anti-Drug Commission, said dealers caught before May were mainly stocking drugs since they realized police would maintain a closer watch when the Expo opened.
The city now records 32,716 drug users, and 217 were newly found in the first quarter this year. More than 95 percent of the new drug addicts were using synthesized drugs such as "ice" and ketamine which can severely damage a user's nervous system and produce hallucinations.
