Drug smuggler given 15 years

A FOREIGN man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for trying to smuggle more than 430 grams of heroin into the city, officials said yesterday.

The suspect reached Shanghai on March 29 on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Customs officers questioned him and he admitted that he'd swallowed a quantity of the drug and was on his way to sell it in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

He was found to be carrying 50 wraps of heroin of about 66 percent purity, weighing a total of 435.8g.

Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office charged him with drug trafficking but suggested a light sentence because he had cooperated.

Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court accepted the suggestion and sentenced him to 15 year in jail. Officials didn't reveal the identity or nationality of the suspect.

Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office said it would from now on provide courts with a recommended sentence.

In a separate case, prosecutors said yesterday that they had charged five people for possession of and dealing a variety of drugs weighing in total more than 1,000g.
