Drunk driver hits 5 cyclists
A DRUNK driver injured five cyclists after plowing into scooters and bicycles in Baoshan District yesterday morning, police said.
One of the injured, 49-year-old Jiang Zongyuan, suffered fractures and underwent emergency surgery.
The others suffered cuts and bruises and were in a stable condition, officers said.
The 24-year-old driver, surnamed Huang, was held by police.
According to officers, Huang had been drinking at a downtown KTV through the night. After the drinking session, Huang hired a driver to take him home, police said.
However, believing he had sobered up, Huang changed his mind as they neared his home and decided to drive the rest of the way himself, police said.
But at around 8am Huang's car hit three scooters and two bicycles in front a residential community on Hulin Road, knocking the riders to the ground, police said.
"The front of the car was severely damaged," said a witness, surnamed Fan. "The driver began drinking water after stopping (in the hope of bringing down his blood alcohol level)."
A man surnamed Wei, whose feet were injured in the incident, said the car was being driven in a "crazy" manner. Most of the injured were residents going to or returning from a wet market.
Police said they were still investigating.
A revised traffic law was introduced this year to impose heavier punishments on drunk drivers.
Crackdowns on drunk driving have led to a decline in Shanghai. Officers said they had dealt with 8,000 cases this year by late October - down 70 percent on the first 10 months of 2010.
