Elderly woman dies in blaze

AN elderly woman burned to death in her apartment after neighbors were unable to break down its steel door.
Residents rushed to the apartment in Minhang District about 5pm on Sunday after hearing the 86-year-old woman screams for help. But they found the steel door to her apartment locked and were unable to force it open. When firefighters arrived they smashed down the door but the woman died in hospital. According to neighbors, the old lady had been pounding on her windows and pleading for help as heavy smoke engulfed the apartment. Neighbors said she did not hear them urge her to open the door.
