English standards to be issued
THE Shanghai English Language Usage Standards will be issued next month to improve English-language signs and services before the 2010 World Expo, the Shanghai Language Work Committee said today.
The 10 volumes of standards will have an introduction to basic translation rules and provide translations of commonly used words for 12 industries including public transport, hospitals, tourist spots and restaurants.
The standards have been worked out and language experts including native speakers are making the final revisions.
The standards will be the regulation translations for all industries. There will be inspections to see how the standards are being applied, officials said.
