Entering traffic to get checked

ALL vehicles entering the city will have to go through stringent security checks starting next month to ensure the safety of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
The checks - beginning on April 15 and continuing until November 15 - apply to corporate and private vehicles and trucks, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said yesterday.
To shorten the checking process, free fast-track passes are available for drivers, including expats and overseas Chinese, from today at city police stations.
Holders of the passes will not need to have identity documents, including ID cards and driving licenses, checked when entering the city at six expressway toll gates.
Officials said they had set no quota for fast-track pass applications.
"There are no restrictions about where the cars are domiciled," said Zhuang Liqiang, a police media officer.
"The permits are available for all cars entering or leaving the city."
Shanghai police said the permits would only be checked at the toll gates and "have nothing to do with urban traffic."
Shanghai traffic authorities announced an Expo transport plan in January, ruling no vehicles except those with special passes to be allowed within a 7-square-kilometer zone around the Expo site.
Shanghai has about 1.6 million vehicles running through the city daily but this will increase markedly during the Expo.
