Epic adventure ends at Expo
FOUR Portuguese drivers will today complete an epic journey to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Traveling in two vehicles packed with provisions, they left Portugal's central city of Leiria on May 1 and are due to arrive in Shanghai at around 4pm today, in time to celebrate the Portugal Pavilion Day tomorrow.
The four drove the route taken by Italian explorer Marco Polo during his odyssey to China in the 13th century.
Before the journey began, the group said the aim of the trip was to strengthen the links between Portugal and China and get to know other cultures on a journey that "is expected to be fantastic in all aspects."
Afonso Cerejo, who lives in Changzhou, came up with the idea and he was joined on the trip by Rui Gaspar, 54, Lus Abreu, 48, and 26-year-old Joao Caiado.
The team traveled across 13 countries on its journey of some 16,000 kilometers in almost 40 days.
They crossed Europe, entering Asia through Istanbul, passing through many different landscapes and experiencing many cultures -- from Monaco, land of the super rich, to the steppes of the Gobi Desert where nomadic tribes live a simple life, eking out an existence from the land.
