Estranged couple plunge to death after quarrel

A COUPLE died last night after falling from their 9th-floor apartment in Pudong New Area, police said.

The couple, both under 40, left a five-year-old son.

Investigators are still searching for a clue to their deaths and are trying to establish what happened between them before the fall, police said.

Autopsies may be needed to collect evidences to help the investigation.

The wife's mother said her daughter Li Lei had argued with her husband Wu Jun for a divorce for a long time, but Wu never agreed, which could be the cause of the tragedy.

The incident happened at about 8pm yesterday in the Building No. 44 of Yongtai Garden on Yongtai Road near Shangnan Road, said Li's mother, who was in the apartment when they fell off.

Li's mother, insisting on anonymity, told reporters today that she heard Li calling for her but when she went to the couple's room, Li had fallen off the balcony, leaving Wu alone there. Wu later jumped off after the mother rushed downstairs.

The couple were pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.

The mother admitted her daughter had an extramarital affair and the couple had talked about divorce many times.
