Events mark Cultural Heritage Day

A host of cultural events and performances will be held in Shanghai to celebrate the China's Cultural Heritage Day on June 11 Saturday, officials said today.

There will be touring shows of Chinese arts and crafts such as paper-cutting, embroidery, and bamboo carving until June 31.

Shanghai Peking Opera House, Shanghai Yueju Opera House and Shanghai Huju Opera Theater, Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe and Shanghai Puppet Theater will bring their performances to local residential communities.

This year is the nation's sixth Cultural Heritage Day. City officials also announced the third batch of traditions, practices, skills and know-hows as Shanghai's intangible cultural heritages.

Among the 37 new entries are traditional Shanghai cuisine, skills to restore antique ceramics, and folk customs for the Dragon Boat Festival. In addition, 317 ancient Chinese books on philosophy, poetry, traditional Chinese medicine, and laws are also included in the protection list.

To raise public awareness of the city's cultural heritages, all the 13 history and heritage museums in Shanghai will be open to students for free for at least one year.
