E-waste recyclers to get bonus
RESIDENTS in the future may recycle old cell phones, batteries and used light bulbs at an intelligent collection bin that will then give them a bonus such as gift cards or points on their bank card, city officials said ahead of today's World Environment Day.
Officials said they are putting together a collection and recycling network for small electronics, but there are several hurdles to resolve and legislation that will be needed to make the system work. No deadline has been set.
"How to collect small E-waste like used light bulbs from residents and ensure safety during the procedure is a challenge," said Zhang Quan, director of Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau. "That means not only preventing leakage of harmful chemicals from used bulbs but also protection of people's private information on their used cell phones."
Government and licensed E-waste collection companies will set up collection spots in supermarkets, neighborhoods and government offices.
