Exhibition kicks off to show ancient books
AN exhibition kicked off today at Shanghai Library to show the city’s achievements in preservation of Chinese ancient books in the past 10 years since the state council launched a nation wide campaign to enhance the efforts.
The exhibition, showcasing 70 choicest ancient books provided by 12 local libraries and museums, runs until Sunday and is open to the public for free. It consists of both books listed in the national and city-level lists of valuable ancient books and newly found rare ones when librarians were cataloging the ancient books.
Shanghai established a Chinese ancient books preservation center in the Shanghai Library in 2008 and it has been coordinating with local public libraries, museums, publishers and libraries in universities, research institutes and religious organizations in preservation and research of ancient books.
The Shanghai Library alone has repaired 19,733 ancient books with over 1.09 million pages in the past 10 years, which accounts for more than 10 percent of the ancient books repaired in the whole country during the same period.
By now, seven local libraries and museums have been named as national key units for ancient books preservation and 913 books collected in Shanghai have been included on the national list of valuable ancient books.
Despite the achievements, Zhou Deming, deputy director of the Shanghai Library, said there were challenges in the protection of ancient books and the lack of professional talents was one of the most severe problems.
“There are more than 50 million ancient books in China and at least 10 percent of them are in urgent need of repair, according to the statistics of the National Library,” he said. “But the number of professionals who can do repairing is less than 100.”
A forum, the third of its kind, will be held on Thursday for experts from Shanghai and Taiwan to exchange experience in ancient books protection.
