Experts say the building cracked by nearby construction is safe
CONSTRUCTION experts said on Saturday that a 14-floor apartment building in Hongkou District, which showed cracks in walls after a nearby hotel began to build an underground parking lot, is "safe to live in."
The district government said in a statement that the monitor results of the cracks and subsidence are reliable after some residents questioned its credibility.
The monitor report, conducted by a local architectural and engineering company invited by the hotel, claimed that the statistics "are within a controlable range" and recommended repair and reinforcement work be done on the building to prevent bigger cracks.
The experts, summoned by the local constrctuion safety inspectors, checked the monitor files and visited the construction site on Saturday afternoon. They asked the builders to strengthen the reinforced concrete foundation of the parking lot.
More than a week ago, some 80 households in the building set tents near their complex to protest the reckless construction work.
They noticed the cracks earlier this year but did not reach any agreement with the contractor on reinforcement work and compensation after three rounds of talks.
