Experts work on salvaging fire-damaged manuscripts

LAN Fan, a Shanghai University professor who lost almost all of his manuscripts from the past 10 years in the deadly high-rise fire on Monday, has received his computers' hard disks from firefighters who found them in the ashes.

Shanghai Computer Association officials have lent a hand to Lan, helping him to dismantle the two burnt laptops and removing the hard disks from them.

The hard disks were later taken to the association and experts there have started recovery work.

Chen Du, an official with the association, said the hard disks suffered both water and fire damage, making it more difficult for them to recover the data.

He said they were still unclear how much of the data could be recovered and the result would be announced on Monday.

The professor saved all of his work from the past 10 years in his two laptops, including his latest book, which he started writing 10 years ago and was about to finish and have published this month.

"I'm so glad as there is still some faint hope," said Lan.
