Exploring future of art, design education

Over 30 of the world’s leading art and design schools will attend an event in the city later this year to showcase and explore creative teaching and learning in the subject.

The Art and Design Education FutureLab will be held at the West Bund Art Center, a former aircraft-manufacturing plant along the Huangpu River in Xuhui District, from November 25 to December 1.

Operated by the West Bund Art and Design Fair team, it will feature more than 30 prestigious art schools, such as the UK’s Royal College of Art, Berlin University of the Arts, Aalto University of Finland, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, New York University Shanghai, China Academy of Art and the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Each school will have a booth focusing on diverse art and design teaching methods, as well as the latest practices and social trends such as material design and artificial intelligence. Works from students and teachers will be on display.

Participants will share their expertise at forums on topics such as future art education, art professional training and art education in middle and elementary schools. The schools will also hold workshops showcasing the latest theories and research methods.

Naren Barfield, deputy dean of the Royal College of Art, said the event is closely related to the current state of art ecology and the topics discussed would be extremely diverse, ranging from kindergarten to doctoral education.

Li Wei, a Shanghai Education Commission official, said cooperation during the event would play a role in the city government’s future art education policies.
