Explosion in fuel plant

MORE than 200 oil drums went up in flames yesterday afternoon, following an explosion at a suburban fuel processing plant.

Residents living close to the riverside oil plant in Jiading District's Nanxiang Area fled the scene and no one was injured.

The first blast occurred about 2:20pm, followed by other explosions. The plant was engulfed in 20-meter-high flames and dark smoke spread out from the building.

Oil drums containing petrol and diesel had been arranged densely inside the plant and soon began exploding.

The fire spread to the nearby river with burning oil floating on the water, witnesses said.

Residents in Jinghua Village on Wenbei Road grabbed what valuables they could and fled from the area.

Firefighters, backed by a helicopter, were quickly on the scene. The area around the blaze was sealed off as crews tackled the flames.

The fire was extinguished in an hour, but choking white smoke continued to envelope the village afterwards.

Charred 170-liter oil drums were visible in the wreckage.

The fire occurred in the fuel processing plant's warehouse and a 200-square-meter area was destroyed.

Nearby buildings were also affected by the blast. The roof of a timber plant warehouse was destroyed and part of a concrete factory also went up in flames.

Two trucks parked close by were destroyed.

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation.
