Expo flower to bloom in homes
"EXPO Morning Glory," the species of flower blooming in the Expo site, will be able to enter ordinary households soon, its breeder said today.
Cai Run, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's College of Agriculture and Biology, has spent five years with his colleagues to develop suitable flowers for the Expo.
They tested 800 species to select the most beautiful and suitable flowers, with a longer flowering period, better resistance to disease and to the scorching sun and rain storms in the summer. After hybrid, purification and breeding, the college has developed eight types of colorful Expo Morning Glory and more species are being bred.
The new species will also cost half the price compared with ordinary ones in decoration.
The college is now trying to work with local nursery gardens and seed companies to help decorate the city streets and ordinary households.
