Expo headquarters completes

CONSTRUCTION and outfitting finished this morning on the Expo Center, the main venue for ceremonies, forums and conventions at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, making it the first of the four pavilions along the site's central axis to be completed.

Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng pushed a button to launch colored ribbons at a ceremony held in the main hall of the center to celebrate completion.

The 142,000-square-meter building in Pudong New Area will also be the operations and media center at the Expo site.

It is one of the five permanent, "green" constructions at the Expo site, along with the China Pavilion, the Theme Pavilion, the Performance Center and the Expo Boulevard.

A summit forum at the end of the Expo in October will be held in the 2,600-seat main hall among world national leaders.

It will be turned into a convention center after the 2010 event.

It may hold many international events such as the ceremony of the Laureus Prize, said said Dai Liu, president of the Expo Group in charge of construction.

The National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference of Shanghai is planned to be held at the center from 2011.

The venue is expected to be a new icon along the Huangpu River, he said.

The highlight of the Expo Center is its environmentally friendly design. It will recycle river and rainwater and will be made of ecologically friendly materials.

All pavilions for Expo are supposed to be completed by the end of this year. Trial operation of the Expo site begins in April.
