Expo opening show wrapped in mystery

OPENING and closing ceremonies for World Expo Shanghai be completely different in style to those at the Beijing Olympics, officials revealed today.

The world fair will open with a spectacular evening show on April 30 and conclude after a closing ceremony on October 31, said Yang Xiong, Shanghai's executive vice mayor and executive deputy director of the Executive Committee of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

Yang did not reveal further details of the shows this morning at a press conference three days ahead of the 100-day countdown to the event.

Construction of most venues at the Expo park is nearly complete and 80 percent of the exhibitors have started work on their displays, Yang said.

A total of 192 nations and 50 international organizations worldwide have confirmed their participation in the Expo. All of the mainland's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and cities, along with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan will also take part.

More than 18 million tickets have been sold so far, Yang said. The organizer expects to attract 70 million visitors for the six-month event.
