Expo sets up park-ride lots

THE Formula-One Circuit in Jiading District, the Hongqiao Integrated Transport Hub and some areas in Songjiang University Town will be used as park-and-ride parking lots for the 2010 World Expo, a top official of the Shanghai Traffic Authority said yesterday.

A total of 11,566 car spaces will be available in the park-and-ride lots, offering cheap parking for drivers who will then take shuttle buses or the Metro to the Expo site, said Huang Rong, director of the city's construction commission.

Thirty parking lots with a total of 11,584 parking spaces will be built around the Expo site for shuttle and tour buses.

The city government began a park-and-ride scheme for Shanghai commuters in July, with 292 spaces at the Songhong Road lot and 70 spaces at the Jinjiang Amusement Park lot.

The government will also develop a smart transportation system to let people know, through real-time cell-phone short messages, where they can find a parking lot, how congested Metro stations are and how well the crowds are moving at entrances and major pavilions during the 184-day event, a previous report said.
