Expo wheelchair users reminded to return them
VISITORS should take good care of the wheelchairs they rent at the Expo site and return them in time, a senior Expo organizer said today.
Some wheelchairs have been lost or broken since the Expo opened on May 1. The organizer also said some visitors sublet the chairs to others because they were too tired to return them, said Xu Weiguo, deputy party chief of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination.
The organizer will improve the rental and return process to reduce these actions, he said.
One thousand more wheelchairs donated by the Shanghai Charity Foundation are available to rent at the Expo site from today. The site has now a total of 3,000 rentable wheelchairs for needy visitors, treble the number on May 1.
Most of the chairs are available at site entrances and people can apply by paying a 200-yuan (US$29.30) deposit. They can be returned at any wheelchair rental area on departure.
The rental service is available between 9am to 9pm.
Some wheelchairs are around the site, including inside the China Pavilion and Theme Pavilions, for emergency help. These chairs must be returned when visitors leave the pavilions.
Expo staff have begun asking seniors and disabled people to show their certificates when borrowing a wheelchair to avoid people from abusing the service to bypass long lines.
