Fake doctors jailed after poisoning girl

TWO men have been put behind bars after operating an unlicensed clinic and causing the death of a girl who had taken their "private herbal medicine."

Li Hua and Geng Yong were jailed for 10 years and five years respectively and fined 20,000 yuan (US$2,930) and 10,000 yuan each by the Hongkou District People's Court, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Li and Geng, though unlicensed, launched a clinic with their limited knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and prescribed "herbal medicine" to patients, the court was told.

The girl's mother visited their clinic early this year after her daughter suffered mental illness. The fake doctors prescribed medicine costing 30,000 yuan and took a down payment of 8,000 yuan. Li then put a pack of powder into a soup and asked the girl to swallow it, the report said.

But the girl started vomiting 20 minutes after leaving the clinic. Li and Geng called emergency doctors but the girl died, doctors told the court. The report did not specify the girl's age.
