Fake plates help drivers to evade highway tax

POLICE and highway authority said today they will team up to punish roadside agents who charge out-of-town drivers to help them evade the local highway tax.

Police said they will step up patrol to capture lawbreakers. Drivers seized for paying the agents will be fined 200 yuan while the agents will be detained and fined.

According to a local TV report, the agents put a fake local license plate over that of their customers charging 20 to 30 yuan for each service. The undercover reporter taped their transactions on Highway G15 near a local toll station.

Vehicles with a non-Shanghai plate are required to pay a local highway tax of 50 yuan and more based on their size in addition to normal highway tolls. This enabled the agents to make money using fake Shanghai plates.

Highway authority told Shanghai Daily the bogus plates are easy to tell but toll collectors, mostly women, are afraid of stopping them for fear of revenge by the agents. Increased police patrol is expected to deter the illegal business.
