Fake watch ring busted, 12 nabbed in Shanghai, Shenzhen

SHANGHAI police say they have busted a 12-people ring that manufactured and sold fake brand-name watches in Shenzhen and Shanghai.

More than 2,000 fake Vacheron-Constantin and Cartier watches and over 10,000 components were found in the ring's hideouts in the two cities. Police estimate the value of the case is about 10 million yuan (US$1.56 million).

In March and April, two suspects were caught in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Area in Pudong while peddling counterfeit watches. The police then seized 289 watches, imitations of more than 20 brands, in their rooms.

Through questioning, police discovered the ring leader, surnamed Hu, who also produced fake watches and sold them on the Internet.

After three months of investigation, Pudong police raided the ring's hideouts in Shanghai and Shenzhen and captured 12 suspects.
