Family of dead cabbie gets nothing in lawsuit

THE family of an unlicensed cabbie stabbed to death in May was disappointed when the suspect said he was too poor to pay any compensation at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday.

The suspect, Diwu Panlong, 22, said he agreed to pay compensation as he was very sorry for what he had done. But he shook his head when the judge asked if he had any property or savings he could use to pay.

The suspect in the killing of the cab driver has been charged with robbery and could face the death penalty. Diwu is accused of killing the driver with a folding knife while trying to rob him.

The family of the victim, surnamed Jiang, is suing for more than 710,000 yuan (US$113,964) in compensation.

No decision has yet been announced in either case.

Jiang's father and wife told the court Jiang had been the breadwinner for the family and had an eight-year-old daughter.
