Farm products without pesticide tests to be banned from city’s markets

AGRICULTURAL products that don’t get pesticide residue tests won’t be allowed to be sold in the city’s markets this year, the local food safety watchdog said.

Officials also said strict food safety supervision will be applied to wholesalers and retailers, producers and sellers of foods considered most at risk for contamination, and companies and agents that import food.

The monitoring and supervision of food sold online is also under discussion, officials said.

Local authorities will tighten supervision of small food stalls, small restaurants and small food processing workshops, most of which are unlicensed.

To ensure food safety, bean sprouts, mutton, bean curd and cooked food will be the biggest targets of inspectors of small food producers and sellers this year.

Special campaigns will focus on dairy products, meat products, infant food, cooked food, food containers and soy bean products. Any business without a license will be shut down immediately, officials said.

Officials said night markets will be supervised starting this year. At residents' request, the government will inspect stalls at night markets to ensure food safety and the smooth flow of traffic.

City officials said they will require insurance for food production, transportation and food enterprises considered to be most at risk for problems this year in order to protect consumers.

Those affected by compulsory insurance are major food enterprises producing dairy products, infant food and edible oil; big food wholesalers; big supermarkets, businesses involved in big wedding banquets; self-made wedding banquets in villages; and collective food producers and delivery companies.

Officials said there were eight mass food poisoning cases in the city last year that sickened 184 people but no deaths.
