Fatally beaten toddler refused admission to kindergarten

A FOUR-year-old toddler who was bashed to death by his father was once refused admission to a kindergarten because of injuries his parents failed to explain, a local newspaper reported today.

When Zhang Jian was refused enrollment he was again beaten by his father after returning home.

The father, Zhang Shaobin, 38, from southwestern Guizhou Province, started the fatal beating on Saturday after the boy did not eat his lunch and the father had drunk two bottles of beer and two liters of yellow wine.

Zhang Shaobin beat the boy mercilessly almost everyday, the neighbors said. Neighbors and relatives tried to stop him but Zhang threatened to beat the boy to death if they didn't stop hassling him.

The toddler was also beaten by his mother and his elder brother, who was rarely beaten himself.

The toddler's death received wide media attention because some experts said it highlighted the lack of law against family violence in China.

"I'd prefer the father to be severely punished," said Lv Bing, a lawyer on adolescence protection of Shanghai Bar Association.
