Father and son charged with coercion
A MAN and his son who threatened home owners and decorating teams to pay them to knock down walls in a residential complex in Baoshan District have been charged with coercion, prosecutors said today.
Prosecutors said the pair was responsible for cleaning up construction waste in the complex. They also offered to tear down walls for residents but no one hired them because the price was too high.
Since 2011, the father and son started forcing the owners to accept their services by refusing to clean construction waste and taking tools. They threatened the owners and construction workers by taking hammers and wooden sticks with them, prosecutors said.
In video footage shot by a victim, the father was armed with a wooden stick and took two men with him. The son was shouting at a construction worker and said only he had the qualification to knock down walls.
"I didn't threaten them. There were some communication problems because I spoke loudly," Zhu told prosecutors.
The pair was arrested last September after more than 10 home owners reported to police.
Prosecutors didn't say how much the father and son had earned through coercion.
