Father dumps kids at cop station

A FATHER of two abandoned his children at a police station in Baoshan District yesterday morning and refused to take them back despite police persuasion.

But a family member, their aunt, who visited the children, a boy and a girl, in the afternoon took them back with her, police said.

The father, a migrant worker, left a letter while abandoning the pre-school children, aged 3 to 4, saying that "life is tough for the family and I cannot afford to take care of the children."

The man scrawled the letter on a scrap of paper and put it inside their bags.

The mother had left the family long ago, according to police. The children, who used to live with their grandfather in their rural hometown, were sent back to their father recently.

The police went online with the case on their Weibo microblog, requesting information regarding the family from the public. A netizen subsequently provided them with the father's phone number. The police then called the father many times but he simply refused and then just stopped taking their calls.
