Father held after twins left outside die
A FATHER has been detained for allegedly abandoning his twin daughters to die outside a seniors home, police said yesterday.
The Pudong New Area People's Hospital said the babies were born on Sunday, six weeks prematurely, and had been given little chance of survival.
Their 30-year-old father, surnamed Yang, and mother, 24, whose surname is Zhu, decided to stop treatment, said Gu Tianlai, a doctor at the hospital.
However, Yang removed the twins from the hospital without authorization on Monday and left them in front of a rest home, police said yesterday.
They were found that afternoon but could not be saved.
The girls were born in critical condition.
"They suffered breathing and heart problems," Gu said yesterday.
"Chances of survival for such babies are small, while medical expense are high," Gu said.
"And even if they managed to survive, their quality of life would probably be low."
After considering the facts, Yang and Zhu decided to end treatment, Gu said.
But on Monday Yang took his daughters from the hospital and left them in front of the home. A passer-by found the babies and alerted police, who took them to the hospital.
"By then one had already died and the other was very weak," said Gu.
The second baby died early yesterday, the hospital said.
Yang, a migrant worker from Henan Province, who works as a security guard, was released on bail yesterday.
