'China's rock music father' becomes superstar referee for new music show

 "China Star," a Sino-American cultural exchange and cooperation program to bring China music industry to the world was launched today in Shanghai.

The large-scale Grammy-branded pop music TV series is co-produced by Starry Production and Dragon TV, in partnership with China Recording Association and the Recording Academy.

The show, first of its kind in China will be presented in accordance with the international standards of assessment criteria and procedure.

The series will air on Dragon TV every Saturday evening starting November 21.

As the show’s submission channel, the China Star-CRA Award has recently opened its collections for music works. The award is currently the only channel available in China to select qualified works for the President’s Merit Award by the Recording Academy.

Producers of the show said that it will play a crucial role in enhancing the cultural exchange and cooperation between China and the United States.

The program is also expected to serve as a channel to introduce the talents of China’s music industry to the world.

Contestants in the show are required to be well-known and influential singers who have released singles or albums within a period of five years.

In addition to a professional judging panel and system, three remarkable Chinese music producers and artists - Liu Huan, Sandy Lam and Cui Jian will act as the Superstar Referees to recommend top music stars for the show.

Next February at a gala of "Grammy Salute to China" during the 58th Grammy Week in Los Angeles, the winner of the TV show will represent the voice of China and be presented the President's Merit Award by Neil Portnow, the president and CEO of the Recording Academy.

Over the past years, recipient of the award have included some of the most established and outstanding artists in their areas, such as Kenny Burrell, Lang Lang and Loretta Lynn.

Cui, known as "the father of Chinese rock music" said that the show will propel the development of contemporary Chinese music in diverse styles.

Cui added that his criteria for the contestants are people who have superb singing skills and a lot of creativity and passion for original music and performing styles.
