Father 'tried to beat own son to death'
A FATHER has been arrested for allegedly trying to beat his son to death with a block of wood, Jiading District prosecutors said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Tang, is said to have snapped after being repeatedly attacked by his unemployed son.
The younger man, who is in his early twenties, suffered brain damage in the assault and is in a coma in hospital.
Tang, a 61-year-old Sichuan Province native, came to the city last year to earn money to pay for medical costs for his sick wife. His son joined him in Shanghai this summer and frequently asked his father for money.
Tang tried to force his son to find work by refusing him money. But every time he did so, his son would beat him and even threatened to kill his father, according to prosecutors.
Unable to bear the violence any longer, Tang rented another room and wanted his son to leave. But when his son learned of this on October 29, he beat and kicked his father.
When neighbors tried to intervene, the son shouted threats to kill his father, prosecutors said.
Tang was so angry that he got up early the next morning and drank wine alone. When he looked at his son, who was still sleeping, he became even angrier and decided to kill him, prosecutors said.
Tang picked up a large block of wood and began hitting his sleeping son's head, prosecutors said.
When the young man awoke and tried to stand up, Tang, afraid of what his son might do, continued to batter his head until he stopped moving, prosecutors said.
Tang, who is alleged to have thought that his son was dead, surrendered to police.
