Film studio explosion kills 1, injures 3

ONE person died and three others were injured in an explosion during the filming of a new TV drama at the Shanghai Film Studio at suburban Chedun Town in Songjiang District last weekend, authorities confirmed yesterday.

The three injured were in stable condition and were discharged from the hospital while the cause of the explosion was still under investigation and authorities were tight-lipped about the case.

The filming of a not-yet-released Chinese spy show, "Ci Die," roughly translated as "Stinging Butterfly" was temporarily suspended so police can investigate.

The incident happened about 4pm on Saturday when one of the production teams was filming a scene involving an explosion. Though none of the actors was believed to have been hurt, four members of the filming group were injured, one fatally.

No details on the injuries were released.

Smoking was the suspected culprit in the explosion, according to studio sources, but no suspected cause has been released by authorities.

Neither the police, local government nor the studio has made any further announcements.

The explosion was not the first at the studio.

In 2010, actor Yu Haoming and actress Selina Jen suffered serious burns when filming a TV drama, "I Have A Date With Spring," at the Chedun studio.
