First giant panda born in Shanghai and her mother die

THE first giant panda born in Shanghai and her mother have both died due to intestinal twist and acute pancreatitis respectively, the Shanghai Wildlife Park announced today.
The mother Guo Guo, 21 years old, showed symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea and bellyache on December 19, and her situation worsen three days later.
She died on December 26 because of acute pancreatitis and multiple organ failure, the park said.
Hua Sheng, the first giant panda born in the city, died on December 31, just 175 days after birth. She weighed 10 kilograms when she developed intestinal mucus, vomiting and bellyache on December 23.
She had 80 centimeters of intestines cut and received a blood transfusion, but still died due to Intestinal necrosis and multiple organ failure, according to the park.
Ni Li, an park employee, said the statements came today instead of the days of the panda's death because the park is conducting pathological analysis with the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.
"We feel very sad over the two giant pandas' death, and face great pressure now," Ni said.
She said the park has conducted research with the center over the tragedy and will work on the prevention of such incident, but she denied any irregularity in the nursing of the pandas.
"Our animal keepers are professional and took good care of them, but raising giant pandas is difficult," she said.
The park was designated to be a giant panda preserve in Shanghai by the State Forestry Administration of China in March last year, and the other two newly designated panda reserves are in Beijing and Guangzhou.
Guo Guo and another giant panda were transported to the park from the Wolong center.
