Five gangs busted for selling fake Expo goods

SHANGHAI police have destroyed five gangs and seized 27,500 counterfeit Expo items during a crackdown, police said yesterday. The number of suspects detained was not revealed.

Police said they had been trying to locate the sources and hideouts of these copycats in a crackdown campaign to root out fake products.

Last Thursday, a man surnamed Wei was detained in Sanlin Town in Pudong New Area for selling fake Haibao, the Expo 2010 mascot, and other souvenir products. Police found more than 5,000 counterfeit goods in Wei's place.

Also in Sanlin Town, another suspect surnamed Feng was caught on Monday for selling fake Haibao toys. More than 2,500 counterfeits were seized. Feng admitted that he started the wholesale business with some suppliers in May.

Huangpu District police also confiscated more than 20,000 fake Haibao souvenirs from three warehouses and did not provide more details. They said a press conference would be held next week to release more information.
