Five officials on trial over trader's bashing
FIVE urban management officers who allegedly beat a 28-year-old street vendor into a coma are on trial today in Shanghai for causing deliberate injuries.
The trial started at 9am at Minhang People's Court, Xinmin.cn reported.
The officers joined a crackdown on illegal street vendors in Minhang's Jiwang Town on July 11 last year. A dispute broke out between them and watermelon seller Peng Lin, the report said.
The officers dragged Peng into a van and beat him, the prosecutors said. Peng suffered bruising to the brain and a spinal injury. Doctors said he will probably live the rest of his life in a vegetative state.
In court, team leader Gu Jianzhong acknowledged the officers had beaten Peng and that it was illegal to detain him in the van.
Zhu Guanxing, an assistant officer was accused of beating Peng, said all the officers in the van had joined in.
