Foreign woman marries for cash

A WOMAN from southeast Asia earned money illegally by marrying a Shanghai man after they met through a dating service agency, the Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration Bureau said over the weekend.
The husband, surnamed Zhang, has already applied for a divorce after learning of the scam. He wants his money back as his wife returned to her native country.
The bureau did not say how much money was involved, but it is believed the woman and the agency each earned tens of thousands of yuan.
Zhang also gave the woman some jewelry as a wedding gift.
The woman, whose name has not been revealed, aroused police suspicion when she asked to cancel a visa extension application after claiming her husband was abusive.
Police looked into the case and found Zhang had never abused his wife, the bureau said. But the woman had already left China.
Zhang married the woman one week after meeting her.
The bureau did not say if the dating service agency faces legal action or if they would try to get the woman extradited.
Bureau officials also reminded residents to be cautious when using dating agencies.
