Foreigner detained for rules breach

A FOREIGN resident has been detained for ignoring community rules in prevention of the novel coronavirus pneumonia, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The incident took place at a residential complex on Shuichan Road W. in suburban Baoshan District at 7pm on Wednesday.

The foreigner, who lives in the residential complex, allegedly declined to show his entry card and have his temperature measured as he entered, also breaking the complex gate.

Police were summoned to the scene after receiving a report.

The foreigner said he didn’t care much about the epidemic, didn’t wear mask when going out and didn’t want to get an entry card to the complex, according to the police. He will be detained for five days.

Shanghai police said yesterday they have punished over 40 people who lied about their travel history, failed to comply with home quarantine, refused to wear masks or declined to have their temperature measured.

Those caught for the first time are admonished but those caught more times face punishments and could even face criminal charges, police said.

Strict measures of home quarantine are exemplified at Xinyue Apartments in Changzheng Town of Putuo District, where 71 people have been placed in isolation so far.
