Former local college headmaster sentenced for bribery and embezzlement involving 9.3m yuan

FORMER headmaster of Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences sentenced for taking 9.3m yuan through bribery and embezzlement

Wu Xiangqian, former headmaster of Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences, was sentenced to 12 years for bribery and embezzlement totally involving 9.3 million yuan (US$1.3 million), Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said Wednesday.

Between 2006 and 2013, Wu abused his power and conspired with three others to siphon off more than 9 million yuan of state assets through various tricks such as making false invoices, court said.

Also, Wu took bribes of 300,000 yuan from a construction company manager for helping him to claim the pay during the construction of the campus from 2007 to 2009, court said.

Wu was also confisticated of personal assets of 1.5 million yuan and fined other 200,000 yuan.

He didn't appeal for a lighter sentence at the court.
