Forum to address the issue of aging in China
THE Washington University in St Louis will host a forum in Shanghai tomorrow on the issue of challenges coming up with China’s aging population.
David Holtzman, an expert on Alzheimer ’s Disease and related neurological diseases, and Nancy Morrow-Howell, an expert on civic and social engagement later in life, both from Washington University in St Louis, will give keynote speeches at the forum.
It is expected that the number of Chinese citizens over 65 will rise to 329 million in 2050 from the level of 100 million in 2005, while China may have at least 24 million of its older citizens to have dementia and 17 million with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Leading Chinese experts from the university, corporate and government sectors will also participate in the forum’s panel discussions to share views on the way to cope with the challenges and identify opportunities for growth.
“The forum will help us to address with our leading Chinese university partners one of the great social challenges of the 21st century,” said Mark Wrighton, chancellor of the Washington University in St Louis.
