Fragments on runway damage jet

AN engine of a Russian cargo plane was damaged after drawing in some metal fragments scattering on the runway while taxiing at the Pudong International Airport yesterday, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

The pilot of the Air Bridge Cargo Airlines plane had problems with the left engine while taxiing on the No. 1 runway at 11:30am and stopped the takeoff.

The airport inspectors found a large amount of metal fragments scattering over 2.5 kilometers on the left side of the runway.

Some were fragments from the broken engine of the Russian plane. The airport closed the runway and dispatched three motor sweepers, 50 staffers and a snow-blowing vehicle. The runway was reopened around 3pm.

"It was still unclear where the metal fragments came from and the airport was still investigating," the authority said yesterday, adding that other flights were unaffected.
