Free gifts for residents taking part in city garbage sorting scheme
People who participate in the city's garbage sorting plan are able to claim gifts distributed by a WeChat account set up by the city's greenery authorities from today with marks rewarded for their efforts.
The new incentive aims to encourage more residents to separate trash by categories, as some residents are still reluctant to participate in garbage sorting after years' of trial, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said today on the World Environment Day.
Residents can apply for a green account card at their neighborhood committees if their residential complexes are covered in the city's garbage sorting plan and get marks after dumping trash into different bins with the guidance of volunteers.
They can get milk, cell phone cards and tickets to parks including the Shanghai Zoo and Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden if their marks reach certain amount and the gifts can be claimed via the account called “GreenFortune-Shanghai".
Another 1 million households will be covered in the city's garbage sorting plan this year, and the target is to cover all residential communities within the middle ring road by the year end, Lu Yuexing, deputy director of the bureau, said today.
The bureau said bilingual promotion has also been conducted at residential communities gathering expats.
By the end of last year, the plan has covered more than 11,000 venues including residential complexes and schools, covering 2.8 million households in the city.
About 16,792 tons of trash are sorted daily.
Poor awareness and non-standard signage are major problems hindering trash sorting in Shanghai, a survey by the Shanghai Statistics Bureau found earlier.
