Free health checks for 80,000 bus, taxi drivers

SHANGHAI’S 80,000 public transport and taxi drivers are to get free health checks, the city transport authority said today.

This announcement coincided with a report by the Shanghai Construction and Transportation Workers’ Union that one in 50 public transport and taxi drivers suffers from kidney stones.

These are often caused by work and lifestyle habits, according to the report.

In a project jointly launched by the union, the Shanghai Transport Commission and No. 411 Hospital of People’s Liberation Army, free health checks, including prostate cancer checks, will be provided to the 80,000 drivers over the next two to five years.

Priority will be given to male drivers aged over 50.
