Friend of family held in baby's abduction
A 10-MONTH-OLD baby kidnapped from his home on Monday afternoon was found by police in the wee hours yesterday and returned to his parents safe and sound.
Shanghai police said they detained three people, including a 23-year-old woman surnamed Yang, as the primary suspect in the case.
The baby went missing at 4pm on Monday after Yang visited the boy's grandmother in their home in suburban Songjiang District.
The family alerted police and detectives located the baby at the home of Yang's relatives around 1am in Minhang District yesterday.
More than a dozen police officers descended on the house and saved the baby, who's in a good condition.
Police yesterday announced three suspects detained at the scene, including Yang and her relatives.
The baby's grandmother, surnamed Li, said she was doing some washing in the kitchen and left the baby with Yang. When Li returned to the room, she found both her grandson and Yang were gone. The grandmother rushed out and bumped into Yang in the stairway, and Yang was empty-handed.
Yang told her that a woman took the baby away. The grandmother then called police but Yang disappeared before they arrived and her mobile phone remained off.
Initial investigation showed Yang used to be the grandmother's colleague. Yang confessed to having kidnapped the baby, police said.
The baby's father said Yang had been working for his firm but quit. She told the baby's grandmother she was visiting to say goodbye. Police are looking for a motive.
