Gambler kidnapped boy to pay debts

A GAMBLER kidnapped a 10-year-old boy he spotted on the street, planning to use the ransom to pay off gambling debts, prosecutors said yesterday.

Wu Liqing, 26, has been arrested on a charge of kidnap in Minhang District, according to prosecutors.

He was detained when he went to an appointed place to collect his ransom money. His hostage, who had been tied to a tree in woodland, managed to escape, said prosecutors.

Wu came to the city last December and worked as a sales manager. He became addicted to slot machines, losing 200,000 yuan (US$30,460).

He kidnapped the boy in a spur of the moment decision on January 26 and called his mother demanding a ransom of 150,000 yuan.

When Wu came to collect the money near a hotel on Chunshen Road early on January 27, he was detained by waiting police.

The boy had managed to escape and called his mother from a convenience store.
