Gambling gang gets sentenced to prison
SIX members of a gang who tricked young students into gambling, cheated them and then tried to force them to pay the "gambling" debts were yesterday given prison sentences ranging from 18 months to 28 months for extortion.
The head of the gang, Wang Jianwen, is still at large.
Wang allegedly conspired with the gang members last November to trick people into joining their gambling games and cheat them. The gangsters then forced the victims to pay the gambling debts by detaining and beating them, the Jiading District People's Court heard.
The gang targeted students because they thought they could easily be duped, the court heard.
Wang and Hong Bohao told a gang member surnamed Feng, who was dealt with in a separate case, to invite two students Qin Bin and Zhang Tao, both minors, to dine with them in a restaurant on November 29 last year. The gang took the two students to a farmer's house after the meal and offered to lend money to them to join the gambling.
The students lost 4,700 yuan (US$690) and were taken to a hotel by the gang. They weren't freed until the next afternoon after they promised to trick classmates into gambling.
