Gang caught stealing shipping containers

PUDONG New Area police have rounded up a gang for stealing shipping containers and container-cooling equipment worth more than 680,000 yuan (US$99,469), officers said yesterday.

The gang have stolen 21 containers and 10 container condensers from a container yard in Pudong's Waigao°?qiao Area since December.

Police received reports from the yard that two containers were lost in May and two fake invoices were found among piles of documents.

A further inventory found another 19 containers - each worth 20,000 to 30,000 yuan - were also missing.

A man surnamed Cao allegedly picked up two more containers using fake invoices on June 5.

Cao, a driver, claimed he had no idea the bills were fake and said a client surnamed Huang gave them to him. Police found five suspects through Cao and reclaimed 18 of the stolen containers.

A yard worker surnamed Gu allegedly came up with the plan. He made the fake bills based on old bills thrown away by clients at the yard.

Others were allegedly responsible for finding drivers and selling the containers. Gu also stole 10 container condensers by picking the locks of containers.

Police caught the five suspects at container yards in Baoshan District and Pudong. They are in custody.
